Be careful about who you deal with when living off of the base. We had to sue our landlord to get our security deposit back, which was a major pain in the butt. Monterey and Pacific Grove can be foggy and damp most of the time, which often leads to mold issues and subsequent allergy problems. Marina and Seaside areas are usually warmer because they get more sun, and drier. The other issue is that a lot of the older homes that are not on the base do not have that much storage. It can be difficult to find housing that takes pets. There is great kayaking (all skill levels) in the area, with lots of opportunities to view wildlife through Monterey Bay Kayaks including their Moss Landing Location. You can drive down the PCH for a day trip to Hearst Castle and to see some beautiful private coastline as well as lots of camping and hiking areas. Golf is huge, of course. Surfing can be great. The best thing is that most of the movie Vertigo was filmed along the coast between San Francisco and Carmel, including Cypress point on 17-mile drive, the Spanish Mission at San Juan Bautista.

Housing at NPS is a combination of new and old. The New housing is nice and for the most part well laid out. The old housing how ever has many, many issues such as mold, lead paint and the list goes on. Housing is run by Pinnacle Housing. Many have a love or hate relationship with this company. More information on the housing can be found at http://www.monterey.pinnaclefamilyhousing.com/ Those stationed at NPS have the choice of housing at either The Parks at La Mesa or Fort Ord. Both areas have both new and old homes. Many community centers are available for you to use at both locations. For those with school age children it is strongly suggested that you talk to parents that live in the area about the schools before making a decision on public schools. Both elementary schools attached to the housing areas have growing problems on all levels. Again for most current information contact a local parent for information. Monterey Bay Unified School District does not have middle schools. Your children will attend a K-6 or K-8 School. If you live in La Mesa your children will attend La Mesa Elementary school, Walter Colton Elementary school (6-8 grades) and then Monterey High. Medical Family members in Monterey will be seen by civilians. Spouses can not be seen at the medical clinic at all. Children can be if you choose but as of July 2010 you could have them see a civilian doctor. My family saw Dr. Peter Franklin and had great success with him! Everything we needed was taken care of and we could always get an appointment when needed. This is a great area with lost to see and do. There are many unique opportunities in this area to volunteer! If you enjoy golf you have Pro-Am tournaments that you can work for. If you enjoy mountain biking you can take part in the Sea Otter Classic! Fort Ord is also ?¢‚Ǩ?ìhome?¢‚Ǩ¬ù to the Laguna Seca raceway for any car or motocross fans. Make the most of your tour and keep your eyes open for some Stars around town!
